A Pat On The Back Can Go A Long Way More than 300 kids at John C. Clark Elementary School in Hartford have been participating in an ambitious reading project: The goal was to read 10,000 books by May 1, 2009. Let the record show that in 10-plus weeks, 9,807 books were read. The goal wasn't attained. But the momentum and new enthusiasm for reading are immeasurable. Brighter Futures Initiative of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; Perceptions of Residents to be served by Family Centers Residents living in the seven communities to be served by Family Centers supported by the Brighter Futures Initiative of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving were surveyed in March, 2002. A total of 1,208 residents were interviewed from households where at least one child eight years old or younger was living. Based on the success of the original Brighter Futures Initiative and the continuing needs of Hartford children, the Foundation, in 2000, committed an additional $15 million over the next 10 years to finance projects and system-wide reform efforts that support young children and their families. To achieve its goals, the Brighter Futures Initiative focuses on four areas: family support and parent education, child care and early childhood education, child and maternal health, and the early grades of school. Family Centers, in partnership with community agencies, provide community-based programs for children and families in seven Hartford neighborhoods. These programs support parents in their own growth and development, their understanding of their child's development, and help families prepare their children for school success. Greater Hartford Literacy Council The Greater Hartford Literacy Council is a non-profit program formed in January 2001 as an outgrowth of recommendations made by the City of Hartford Task Force on Adult Literacy in 2000. Responding to the call for a coordinating council for literacy were the founding partners: the City of Hartford, Hartford Public Schools, Capital Workforce Partners and the Hartford Public Library. Hartford School's Test Scores The state Department of Education is right to investigate the dramatic climb in scores at Betances School. There are two possibilities for the increase in Betances' scores. Either the teachers told the kids the answers on the day of testing, as has been documented in other schools, or else Betances' literacy staff — principal, program director, classroom teachers, reading tutors, paraprofessionals — were teaching reading the right way, which means the test results are an accurate reflection of the students' successful learning. Needy Districts Face Cuts In School Reading Programs The state's neediest school districts are facing cuts in critical programs that help teach children to read because of a looming $20 million falloff in funding under the state's "do-nothing" budget. New Neighbors The Urban Institute has published The New Neighbors, a guidebook to federal and local administrative data about immigration. This guidebook was designed by Urban Institute researchers, in consultation with the Annie E. Reading Gap Is Worsening Rick Green comments on a new study by the National Endowment for the Arts which details steep declines in reading among all segments of the population, and its implications for Connecticut. Overall, in fourth-grade reading, the percentage of Hartford students reaching the state goal dipped from 20 percent to 15 percent. The most troublesome figure is the percentage of students reading at the lowest level, called "below basic," meaning they aren't reading anywhere near grade level. Trim And A Chapter At East Hartford Barbershop Town Councilman Jason Rojas was waiting to get a haircut a while back at 4 Our Brothers Barbershop and saw a bunch of young parents with kids waiting, too.He said it occurred to him "why not have books for the kids to read while they wait for haircuts?"
