Schools On The No Child Left Behind Act List

On Tuesday, the state released a list of 51 public high schools that are not making adequate yearly progress in raising Connecticut Academic Performance Test scores under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The annual performance test is given to high school sophomores. Some of the schools face sanctions because they are making repeat appearances on the list; others are new to the list and will not face sanctions for a year.

Of the schools cited Tuesday, those that are new to the list are marked with an asterisk (*):

SCHOOLS AS A WHOLE

Math And Reading

Seven schools made the list because each school, as a whole, did not meet standards in both math and reading (three last year):

*Stevens Alternate High, East Hartford
Hartford Public High, Hartford
Weaver High, Hartford
Norwich High, Norwich
Common Ground High, New Haven
*Stamford Academy, Stamford
J.M. Wright Technical High, Stamford

Math

Twenty-three schools made the list because each school, as a whole, did not meet standards in math (15 last year):

*Bloomfield High, Bloomfield
Bassick High, Bridgeport
Central High, Bridgeport
Harding High, Bridgeport
East Hartford High, East Hartford
Bulkeley High, Hartford
*Pathways to Technology Magnet School, Windsor
New Britain High, New Britain

Two schools made the list because each, as a whole, did not meet standards in reading (none last year):

Math And Reading

Five schools made the list because at least one subgroup of students (such as black or Latino students, low-income or special education students) did not meet standards in both math and reading (seven last year):

Math

Eleven schools made the list because at least one subgroup did not meet standards in math (11 last year):

Two schools made the list because too few students took the annual test (six last year):

One school made the list because of low graduation rate (none last year).
