January 04, 2013

Politicians, fans, insurance execs, media types and family and friends were at the corner of Prospect and Grove, I mean Bob Steele Street, today to rename the road after the late, beloved, iconic radio broadcaster Bob Steele.

Cold outside, but heartwarming for sure as a crowd gathered at the corner in front of the Travelers Insurance Building where the WTIC broadcast studio was once located .

And Mr. Steele’s famous word of the day had he still been with us?

There wouldn’t be one, those who knew him said. He would be speechless and so humbly grateful.

Among those at the dedication were his four sons, Steve, Paul, Phil and Robert as well as Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra and U. S. Senator Richard Blumenthal. WDRC radio personality Brad Davis, who credited Steele with mentoring him when he began his own broadcasting career more than 50 years ago, emceed the program at the request of the family

The family has commissioned a memorial plaque that will be installed on the Travelers Building at the intersection of Prospect and Bob Steele Streets in the spring.
