McGarry Declares Candidacy For Mayor

By Jenna Carlesso

June 06, 2011

Republican Town Committee Chairman Michael T. McGarry, a former member of the city council, said Monday he has declared his candidacy for mayor.

McGarry said he won't run an active campaign, but will act as a placeholder in case another Republican candidate decides to take the spot.

"If someone with the background, the time and the financial means thinks they'd be a presentable candidate, we'd be happy to talk to them," McGarry said.

In the meantime, he said, he'll attend candidate forums and other city events to present the Republican perspective.

"We have to hold the line," he said "I take this seriously."

McGarry said, however, that his name likely won't appear on November ballot. If another Republican doesn't step up to run, he said, the party could endorse a Democrat or an Independent.
