What’s New on HartfordInfo.org  is a periodic update announcing recent additions to HartfordInfo.org.  Please feel free to forward this message to others. To be added to the distribution list send an email message through our feedback page.

HartfordInfo.org, a program of the Hartford Public Library, is a gateway to information and data on issues important to those who live and work in Hartford and the region.

 

  • Three more Hartford neighborhoods have been added to Hartford Trends, a multi-phase project that provides neighborhood data over time. The database now includes U.S. Census data from 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 for the three initial neighborhoods (Blue Hills, Northeast, and Upper Albany) plus Barry Square, Behind the Rocks, and Frog Hollow.  By the end of 2005, Hartford Trends will expand to include all of Hartford's neighborhoods.  Data from sources in addition to the U.S. Census will be added in the future.  Hartford Trends may be accessed by going to www.hartfordinfo.org and clicking on the “Hartford Trends Statistical Profiles” link in the “Go Directly to Data” box in the center of the page.
  • Hartford Neighborhood Snapshots:  A summary of demographic, housing and income data from Census 2000, this spreadsheet presents data for all Hartford neighborhoods. It includes information on people, racial composition, income, housing, poverty, education and employment.  Hartford Neighborhood Snapshots may be accessed by going to www.hartfordinfo.org and clicking on the “Hartford Neighborhood Snapshots” link in the “Go Directly to Data” box in the center of the page.
  • Estimating the Cost of an Adequate Education in Connecticut:  Do schools and districts have the resources they need to meet performance expectations? This report from the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding addresses this issue.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “estimating the cost” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Education” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Hartford’s Plan to End Chronic Homelessness by 2015:  Mayor Eddie Perez appointed the Commission to end Chronic Homelessness in December, 2004.  The Commission issued this Plan in June 2005.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “chronic” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Homelessness” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Assets and Opportunity Scorecard:  The Assets and Opportunity Scorecard measures the financial security of families in the U.S., ranking the 50 states and the District of Columbia on 31 performance and 38 policy measures in the areas of financial security, business development, homeownership, health care, education, and tax policy.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “scorecard” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Economic Development” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Growing the Future of Hartford Through Quality Education for all Students:    This special report from the Hartford Public Schools celebrates students, teachers, parents, and community, business, and foundation partners.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “growing the future” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Education” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • The Somali Bantu:  Their History and Culture:  A significant number of refugees from Somalia have settled in Hartford in recent months.  This document provides a basic introduction to the people, history, and cultures of the Somali Bantu. It is designed primarily for service providers and others assisting Somali Bantu refugees in their new communities in the United States.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “Somalia” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Immigrants” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Mayor’s Update Summer 2005:  Includes updates on neighborhood policing, early college awareness, homeownership, historical preservation, false alarm regulations, and more.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “mayor’s update” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Government” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Hartford Blueprint for Young Children:  Delivering the Promise of Success:  This document describes a comprehensive five-year plan to enable Hartford’s young children to achieve success in school and beyond. The plan was developed under the Mayor’s direction by a team of early childhood professionals and community leaders.   • Prekindergarteners Left Behind:  Expulsion Rates in State Prekindergarten Systems:  This white paper reports on expulsion rates by program setting (public school, Head Start, private providers), gender, and race/ethnicity.   • Uninsured:  The Costs and Consequences of Living Without Health Insurance in Connecticut:  This report profiles residents without insurance, discusses the consequences of lack of health insurance and estimates the related costs.  Tables and charts present ethnic, racial, income, educational attainment, and gender data.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “uninsured” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Health” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Task Force on No Child Left Behind (Final Report):  This report, produced by the National Conference of State Legislatures, identifies specific areas of the No Child Left Behind Act that need to be changed if states are to guarantee that young people will learn at their full potential.  Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “state legislatures” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Education” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
  • Through an agreement with The Hartford Courant, HartfordInfo.org continues to offer selected Courant articles as permanent additions to the web site.  A few recent additions include:
